Survey Arkansas Poll Results: Lt. Governor's Race
According to our exclusive Survey Arkansas poll, it's the closest statewide race so far. We’re talking about the lieutenant governor's race.

Of 509 likely voters, Democratic candidate Bill Halter holds a nine-point lead over Republican Sen. Jim Holt. Halter gets 48 percent of the vote to Holt’s 39 percent, with 12 percent undecided.

There were once seven men in this race. It's now down to two and both say their political views couldn't be more different.

Since the primary, things have slowed a bit for the candidates, but now the two are gearing back up for what may be the closest race in the state, although right now, Halter's on top.

"I’m gratified by the support," says Halter. "But, really the only poll that matters is Election Day."

Holt responds, "I’m not surprised. He just came off a primary and a run-off election and spent about $1.1 million. We spent 69 [thousand] in a three way race for primary and ours has been quite a while ago."

When you break down the numbers, Holt, an Army veteran and senator from Springdale, beats Halter when it comes to male voters - 47 percent to 45 percent.

But, Halter who's never before run for public office, holds a sizeable lead among female voters with 52 percent to Holt’s 32 percent.

Halter also has the most support among all races with 45 percent of the white vote and 78 percent of the black vote and 29 percent of the Hispanic vote. But, Holt says it's still very early in the campaign.

Holt explains, "I think once that people know where he stands on the issues and I stand on the issues - we've been fighting against giving scholarships or benefits to people that are here illegally, we've been fighting taxes in the House and the Senate for years.”

Halter says, "This is the last step in deciding who the next lieutenant governor is gonna be and I’d just like to make sure the campaign is focused on issues - very clear distinctions between my opponent and myself. I favored an increase in the minimum wage my opponent was opposed..."

And while the two have very different political views, the one thing they agree on is that the man they'll replace leaves behind big shoes to fill.

As you know, Lt. Gov. Win Rockefeller passed away nearly two weeks ago. Gov. Mike Huckabee has not announced whether or not he'll hold a special election to fill the vacancy before the Nov. 7 general election.
